Surface Modification of a Nickel-Free Austenitic Stainless Steel by Low-Temperature Nitriding

چکیده
Low-temperature nitriding allows to improve surface hardening of austenitic stainless steels, maintaining or even increasing their corrosion resistance. The treatment conditions be used in order avoid the precipitation large amounts nitrides are strictly related alloy composition. When nickel is substituted by manganese as an austenite forming element, production nitride-free modified layers becomes a challenge, since nitride element while not. In this study, effects on characteristics obtained steel having high content and negligible one, so-called nickel-free steel, were investigated. Microstructure, phase composition, microhardness, behavior 5% NaCl evaluated. results suggest that volume fraction can avoided using temperatures lower than those usually employed for nickel-containing steels. Nitriding at 360 380 °C duration up 5 h produce layers, consisting mainly expanded γN, which increase hardness comparison with untreated steel. Using selected conditions, resistance also significantly improved.

Nickel films of 150 nm thickness were deposited on 304 stainless steel and post annealed under flow of nitrogen at different temperatures. The prepared samples were corrosion tested in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution using potentiodynamic polarization technique. Crystallographic and morphological structure of the samples were analysed by X-ray diffraction XRD and atomic force microscopy AFM respectively b...
متن کاملLow-Temperature Carburization of Austenitic Stainless Steels
LOW-TEMPERATURE CARBURIZATION is a gaseous carburization process performed at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures where the kinetics of substitutional diffusion are very slow. Low-temperature carburization hardens the surface of austenitic stainless steels through the diffusion of interstitial carbon, without the formation of carbides. The surface must be activated, by modification and remova...
متن کاملLow Temperature Plasma Nitriding of Inner Surfaces in Stainless Steel Mini-/Micro-Pipes and Nozzles
Metallic miniature products have been highlighted as mini-/micro-structural components working as a precise mechanism, in dispensing systems, and in medical operations. In particular, the essential mechanical parts such as pipes and nozzles have strength and hardness sufficient for ejecting viscous liquids, solders, and particles. A low-temperature plasma nitriding process was proposed as a sur...
